If you ever wanted a bridge between The Doors and Afghan Whigs, or thought Nick Cave wasn't lively enough, this now-Detroit-based octet, led for decades by Aussie expat ex-Cave crony Simon Bonney, might be your dream. That said, their first album of 3 A.M. cow-goth romanticism since 1990 could afford to be livelier. But at least three cuts have hooks that stick: big-drummed pagan riffer "Goddess," mutinous thump "The Colonel (Doesn't Call Anymore)," and urban collapse warning "American Twilight." The remaining hot-and-cold-howled art-blues supports its soapy decadence with a solid beat.
