Red House (Anthology Version)
Sello: Legacy Recordings
As with any sprawling box set, West Coast Seattle Boy: The Jimi Hendrix Anthology is geared more towards hardcore fans. Nevertheless, the collection -- an audacious attempt to survey the guitarist's short, but wildly innovative, career using archival recordings, demos, rarities and live material only -- definitely contains a cluster of tracks that are more or less mandatory listening for any fan of classic rock, blues, psychedelia and funk. The best moments are to be found on the fourth disc; there, you can find a version of Ray Charles' "Lonely Avenue" that is blisteringly powerful.
