El Rey de los Borrachos
Sello: Sin Marca Racords
For Lupillo Rivera, like other corrido singers, there's no shame in finding inspiration in a bottle of tequila. Rivera even declares himself "The King of the Drunks" on this first full-length recording since the death of his sister Jenni Rivera, a tragedy that explains the album's dark mood. Backed by traditional mariachi, banda and Norteño arrangements, Rivera takes it straight with a powerful, no-frills delivery on classics like "El Mal Querido" and "Fallaste Corazon." The album's emotion reaches its height with the recording of a barely swallowed sob on "Paloma Negra," an homage to Jenni.
